I went into a library today at the mall. Looking for the music I like among the CD's felt like I wanted to find the satanic bible. So I was surprised to see they have Metallica and other. Then I saw Lulu. First I feeled bad I forgot about this album. Now I feel bad I remembered about it in the first place. I'm happy that the album is expensive and didn't want to buy it too.
I won't even bother to talk about each song. 3 of them are over 11 minutes long, but in the whole song the riffs are repeating on the background and Lou meows over them. Iced Honey is seen as the best on the album.
Though this not a creation by Lou Reed or Metallica. Remeber it's based on two old plays originally written by the German playwright Frank Wedekind. A century ago. Yeah. Blame Frank if the lyrics look weird.
All songs (10) are pretty much the same thing. Instrumentals by Metallica, which does not suck but doesn't make them very good either, and the speaking, not singing, of Lou Reed, because he basically reads the charaters lines.
Some comments on YouTube on the songs sums up very well what you must know about this album. I quote:
"this is an album not for the "metallica mainstreamers", it is for people who know how to enjoy music, musicians, poets, psychiatrists." - dinorellano
"if cliff burton was alive this would not happening..." - metalbcn96
"metalheads can can choose to keep there heads up there own ass or choose to see the true joy in listening the the unique and special union of metal legends Metallica and old skool rocker Lou Reed...Its fuckin out there for sure, no doubt... fuckin good on em...."DIFFERENT" is good....Fuck normal.............embrace the uncommon.....metallica will write more cool heavy metal albums......let them have fun with other styles.......hey they might even invent a new one........" -benocummiskey
...so I am not saying that this album sucks, but it's too different and few appreciate it. I, myself, wait for some better moments to try it again. Lou's style doesn't seem to get along with Metallica's.
I recommend to listen the songs first somewhere like YouTube before download them or buy the disc. It might feel like wasted HDD space or money.
With Rammstein retiring, Disturbed's indefinitely pause and this album, I see a grim future for metal...
